The future of the MLK Freedom Library

We opened in Memorial United Methodist Church on Bryant Avenue in White Plains 18 years ago on Jan. 20, 2008 and moved to the Thomas H. Slater Center in White Plains more than 13 years ago on Nov. 1, 2012.

We are grateful to Memorial and Slater Center for providing space for our library for all those years.  However the co-directors of the library are unable to lead it any more.

We are delighted to announce that the library is being taken over by Jo-Ann Enwezor and will remain in the Slater Center.  Jo-Ann’s library website is https://folksandlore.com/about.

From Jo-Ann Enwezor:

After many meaningful years serving the community, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Library is turning the page.

The stewardship of the library is being passed into new hands and will be reimagined as the Folks & Lore People’s Library, affectionately known as Folks & Lore. While the name will change, the spirit of community, learning and sharing stories that has always animated this space will continue to guide its future.

This transition is both an honor and a responsibility. Carrying forward the work of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Library means building on the foundation that has already been laid while creating new ways for people to gather, read, reflect, and exchange ideas.

More details about what’s to come will be shared soon at folksandlore.com or on Instagram @folksandlore.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the library over the years and helped write its story. The next chapter is just beginning. We hope you follow along.
