Maragaret Eberle Fair Trade Festival
|
This event is held annually, usually on the first Saturday in December, at Memorial United Methodist Church, 250 Bryant Avenue, White Plains, NY. The Martin Luther King Institute partners with Memorial United Methodist Church and several other organizations to host the annual Margaret Eberle Fair Trade Festival and Craft Fair, usually on the first Saturday in December, at 250 Bryant Avenue in White Plains, New York. Fair trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions and securing the rights of marginalized producers and workers. Many of the crafts are made by artists in women-managed cooperatives. Funds raised by the sale of these crafts initiate support for a living wage and better living conditions. At the festival there are tables for fair trade vendors and for fair trade educational materials, Social Justice educational opportunities and workshops. Often there are activities such as meditation, a dialogue on Food Justice and a dialogue on current justice movements such as the Occupy Wall Street movement. Live music is often performed throughout the day. Homemade baked goods, soup, bread and fair trade coffee/tea are available for purchase. |
